As a licensed drone pilot and Norfolk commercial photographer, one of the most compelling aspects of my work is the opportunity to interpret spaces in a way that goes beyond simple documentation. I hold full FAA Part 107 certification, which means every drone flight is conducted safely, legally, and with the technical skill needed to produce high-end professional results. Whether capturing architecture, landscapes, or commercial properties from above, I approach every project with both creativity and a strong commitment to professionalism and compliance.
Architecture isn’t just about structure—it’s about experience. It’s about how a space feels, how it guides movement, and how it tells a story through design, light, and perspective.
Every structure has a story — a purpose behind its design, a flow that connects one space to another, and details that define its character. Capturing that visually requires more than just technical skill. It requires intention, creativity, and a willingness to explore different perspectives that bring that story to life.
Whether I’m photographing a commercial space, a residential property, or a carefully designed interior, my goal is always the same: to create images that invite the viewer in and allow them to experience the space as if they were there.
One of the most rewarding aspects of drone photography is how it transforms perspective.
Places we pass every day can suddenly feel cinematic, abstract, or even completely unfamiliar when viewed from above. Patterns emerge. Symmetry becomes more visible. Light interacts differently with landscapes, architecture, and water.
That shift in perspective is what makes aerial photography so compelling.
As a licensed Part 107 drone pilot, I’m constantly looking for ways to use aerial imagery creatively — not just to capture what a location looks like, but to capture how it feels from above.
One recent project that perfectly reflects this creative approach was filming the Pagoda and Oriental Garden in Norfolk, Virginia.
From the ground, the Pagoda is already one of Norfolk’s most peaceful and visually unique locations. But from the air, the experience becomes something entirely different.
The curved rooftops, winding pathways, reflective ponds, and surrounding greenery all begin to work together visually in a way that can’t fully be appreciated at eye level.
From above, the design reveals its rhythm and balance.
The symmetry of the architecture becomes more pronounced. The calmness of the water creates natural reflections that guide the eye through the frame. The layout of the gardens begins to tell a larger visual story about the space itself.
These are the moments that remind me why I love aerial photography.
Drone photography gives us the ability to slow down, step back, and see places with a completely different level of appreciation.
Drone photography is often associated with practical uses — real estate marketing, commercial development, inspections, and large-scale property overviews.
And while those applications are incredibly valuable, there’s also an artistic side to drone work that deserves attention.
Creative drone photography allows you to:
Sometimes the goal isn’t just to document a location — it’s to create an image or video that evokes emotion and curiosity.
That’s where creativity becomes just as important as technical skill.
Just like traditional photography, drone photography is deeply influenced by light and atmosphere.
The time of day can completely transform an aerial scene.
Early morning light creates softness and calm. Late afternoon and golden hour add warmth, depth, and long shadows that emphasize texture and dimension. Overcast days can create a more moody and cinematic atmosphere.
When I plan a drone shoot, I’m always thinking about:
These details make a significant difference in creating aerial imagery that feels intentional and visually impactful.
One of the most powerful things about drone photography is its ability to tell a broader story.
From above, you begin to understand how spaces connect.
You can see how architecture interacts with landscapes. How waterfronts shape a city. How pathways guide movement. How design exists within a larger environment.
This is especially valuable for:
Drone imagery allows viewers to experience a location in a way that feels immersive and expansive at the same time.
The creative side of drone photography benefits far more than just photographers.
Businesses & Brands
Creative aerial imagery helps businesses stand out visually. Whether for websites, marketing campaigns, or social media, unique drone content immediately captures attention and creates a more elevated brand presence.
Tourism & Hospitality
Hotels, resorts, cities, and tourism organizations benefit tremendously from drone photography because it showcases the experience and atmosphere of a destination — not just individual locations.
Architects, Developers & Designers
Drone photography helps highlight the relationship between structures and their environment, giving viewers a better understanding of scale, layout, and design intent.
Real Estate & Property Marketing
Aerial imagery adds context that ground-level photography simply can’t provide. It helps showcase surrounding areas, property flow, proximity to amenities, and the overall setting.
Creative Agencies & Marketing Teams
High-quality drone visuals create engaging content for campaigns, branding, and digital storytelling. Dynamic aerial imagery often becomes some of the strongest visual content a brand can use.
Drone photography continues to evolve, and I’ve written several other blog posts exploring both the creative and practical applications of aerial imagery.

At the end of the day, drone photography is about more than flying a camera.
It’s about perspective. Storytelling. Creativity.
It’s about finding angles that most people never get the opportunity to see and using those perspectives to create images that feel immersive, dynamic, and memorable.
As a Norfolk drone photographer, my goal is always to create aerial imagery that not only showcases a location — but reveals something new about it.
If you’re looking to elevate your next project with creative aerial photography or video, I’d love to connect.
