A beautifully designed kitchen is more than countertops, cabinets, and appliances. It's the result of thoughtful planning, skilled craftsmanship, carefully selected materials, and countless design decisions that come together to create a functional and inviting space.
As a commercial and architectural photographer serving Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the greater Hampton Roads area, I've photographed a variety of residential and commercial interiors. Kitchens are particularly interesting because there's so much to capture beyond the overall room.
At Glenn Bashaw Photographer, my approach to kitchen photography is about telling the complete story of a space, from the wide architectural views that establish the design to the smaller details that highlight the work of designers, cabinet makers, builders, and other skilled professionals.
The first step in photographing a kitchen is showing how the space comes together.
Wide architectural images help establish the overall layout, cabinetry, countertops, appliances, lighting, and relationship between different areas of the room. They give viewers an understanding of how the kitchen looks, feels, and functions as a complete space.
But creating an effective wide-angle photograph involves more than simply fitting everything into the frame.
Camera positioning, composition, perspective, and lighting all play important roles. The goal is to present the space naturally while emphasizing the design features that make it unique.
For kitchen designers, remodelers, architects, and custom home builders, these wider views provide valuable portfolio images that demonstrate the overall quality and vision behind a completed project.
While wide photographs tell the story of the room, detail photographs reveal what makes the kitchen special.
Cabinet construction, hardware, countertop edges, tile patterns, custom finishes, and carefully integrated lighting can easily get lost in an image of the entire space.
That's why I like to move in closer.
A thoughtfully composed detail photograph can highlight the precision of custom cabinetry, the texture of a backsplash, the finish of a cabinet pull, or the way natural light interacts with a countertop.
These images are especially valuable for the professionals responsible for creating those elements.
For cabinet makers, detail photography showcases joinery, materials, finishes, hardware, and craftsmanship.
For interior and kitchen designers, it highlights the relationships between textures, colors, materials, and decorative elements.
For builders and remodelers, it provides visual documentation of the quality and attention to detail that distinguish their work.
Sometimes, the smallest details communicate the greatest level of craftsmanship.
Kitchens can be challenging spaces to photograph.
Natural light coming through windows may compete with pendant lights, under-cabinet lighting, and other interior fixtures. Reflective countertops, polished appliances, glass surfaces, and cabinet finishes can introduce unwanted reflections or distracting highlights.
My goal is to manage these elements while preserving the atmosphere and design intent of the space.
Careful lighting helps reveal textures, maintain accurate colors, and create a balanced image. Composition determines which features draw the viewer's attention, while perspective helps communicate the proportions and architectural lines of the room.
For example, a wide image might emphasize the relationship between a kitchen island, cabinetry, and surrounding living space. A closer composition might isolate a distinctive light fixture, a custom cabinet detail, or the transition between two carefully selected materials.
Each image serves a different purpose, but together they create a more complete visual story.
Professional kitchen photography isn't just about creating attractive images. It's about building a collection of visual assets that can be used to promote the work behind the finished space.
A well-photographed kitchen provides content for:
A wide image may be perfect for a website banner or portfolio introduction, while a detailed photograph of custom cabinetry or tilework might be more effective in a social media post or project feature.
Capturing both perspectives gives businesses greater flexibility in how they present their work.
One of the things I enjoy most about architectural photography is discovering the details that make each project different.
A beautifully designed kitchen represents the combined efforts of designers, cabinet makers, builders, installers, and other professionals. Every material choice, finish, and carefully considered detail contributes to the final result.
My job is to create images that do justice to that work.
By combining wide architectural photographs with thoughtfully composed detail images, I can help tell the complete story of a kitchen, from the overall design to the craftsmanship that makes it exceptional.
