Top Ten Photos of 2023

As 2023 ends, I wanted to reflect and share my favorite images I took over the last year. It is always good to go back and see what you have done over the previous year. Let me know what you think of the ten images I have chosen. They are in no particular order.

Warehouse in Stafford Virginia

I have been photographing many Arco Construction. When touring the warehouse for the shoot, I was struck by the colors and lines. When photographing large spaces, I think having people in the image gives you a perspective of size.

Oceanview Fishing Pier

This image is close to my heart as it's one of the best-known places in Norfolk. Captured for a corporate art company. Although I usually choose to capture images during the golden hours of the day, I always see the pier midday in the height of summer.

Suffolk Peanut Festival

I captured this using the drone during the Suffolk Peanut Festival. It reminds me of the fairs I attended as a kid. Taking it at night reminds me of that magic that happens when all the lights from the rides and games give energy to the night.

Syd's FishPig Cafe

Is it a restaurant or an art gallery? It is both art and cooking done by chef and owner Sydney Meers. The image was taken at night to highlight his art dining space and the open kitchen and was featured in Southern Living Magazine.

Lillah

I have been photographing Lillah since she was a baby, and this year her senior portraits. I wanted to capture something more than a senior picture but something that showed her personality. Location was the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.

Performance Meats Processing Center and Interchange facility

This image is a lesson in timing. I was capturing a twilight image and had just landed the drone when the sun had set, but it started to put out this incredible pink sky. I quickly put it up again and captured this sky: no photoshop, just Mother Nature.

Elegant Home

New construction by Welden Field & Rowe. The home was built in the historic Freemason section of Norfolk and fits in beautifully; I love the natural light and lines.

Autumn Colors in Vermont

This spot is near my childhood home. It is pretty much inaccessible on foot, but lowering the drone into the river bed allowed me to capture the rocks, reflection, and autumn colors.

Chocolate Tart

Although a simple image, I was so happy to be able to capture the two layers of chocolate. Captured using natural light with a bounce in the front. Dessert by James Beard nominee Chef Sydney Meers.

Old Tree

I just captured this image while visiting New York—an amazing sculpture by Pamela Rosenkranz. I was crossing the road two blocks down when I saw Old Tree, and I knew I had to go see it up close.

Karen Stearns-Epranian - I love your work, each piece can be “felt” a feast for the senses. The tree is incredible for sure.
