When Your Neighbor Is a Beekeeper, Life Is Really Sweet

Sometimes inspiration for a photography project is right next door.

Having a beekeeper as a neighbor gave me the opportunity to photograph something that's both beautifully simple and incredibly visual—pure, raw, local honey from Lillie Bees Apiary.

Honey has everything a food photographer could ask for: rich golden color, texture, transparency, movement, and a natural connection to the place and people behind the product. Pair it with the colors and textures of a charcuterie board, and suddenly a jar of honey becomes part of a much larger visual story.

That's what I enjoy about food photography.

As Glenn Bashaw Photographer, my goal isn't simply to make food look appetizing. I want to create images that communicate something about the product, the experience, and the brand behind it. Whether I'm photographing locally produced honey, a chef's signature dish, restaurant menu items, packaged foods, or products for an advertising campaign, the objective is to create imagery that makes people stop, look, and want to know more.

Food Photography Is About More Than Making Food Look Good

We experience food with our senses, but photography has to accomplish something challenging: communicate taste, texture, freshness, and atmosphere through sight alone.

The glisten of honey.

The texture of cheese.

The crust of freshly baked bread.

The color of fruit.

The details of a beautifully prepared dish.

All of these visual cues influence how we imagine something will taste before we've ever taken a bite.

That's why professional commercial food photography requires more than pointing a camera at a plate. Lighting, composition, perspective, styling, color, texture, and the surrounding environment all contribute to the final image.

The goal is to make the viewer feel like they could re

From Local Honey to Visual Storytelling

The Lillie Bees Apiary honey project is a great example of how food photography and visual storytelling can work together.

A jar of honey photographed by itself can certainly show the product. But placing that honey into a thoughtfully composed setting begins to tell us how it can be enjoyed.

Pairing honey with a charcuterie presentation introduces complementary colors, ingredients, textures, and serving ideas. It gives the viewer context while creating an image that feels more like an experience than a product record.

That's an important distinction in commercial photography.

Sometimes the strongest photograph isn't the one that simply says, "Here's what we sell."

It's the one that says, "Here's how this product can become part of your life."

That approach can be especially valuable for small food producers, specialty brands, restaurants, bakeries, breweries, caterers, and other hospitality businesses that have a story behind what they create.

Creating Appetite Appeal—and a Stronger Marketing Asset

Food photography is often about the smallest details. The right combination of lighting, composition, texture, and perspective can transform a dish or product into an image that immediately captures attention.

With honey, light becomes particularly important. Its translucence, amber tones, reflections, and viscosity can look completely different depending on how it's illuminated. The same principle applies to other foods—the steam rising from a dish, the texture of a sauce, the crisp edge of a vegetable, or the layers of a dessert all help create appetite appeal.

My approach is to use light intentionally so the food maintains a natural, authentic quality while still looking polished enough for commercial use. Composition is equally important. Sometimes the hero is a single product; other times, a wider scene provides the atmosphere and context needed to tell the story.

But creating an appetizing photograph is only part of the goal.

For restaurants and food brands, professional photography is a business and marketing investment. Before someone visits your restaurant, orders from your menu, purchases your product, or contacts your catering company, they may first encounter your images on Google, your website, social media, an advertisement, or an ordering platform. Those photographs begin shaping their expectations immediately.

A thoughtfully planned commercial food photography session can create a versatile library of images for websites and online menus, social media, Google Business Profile, advertising, packaging, print materials, e-commerce, public relations, email marketing, and sales materials.

By considering how the photographs will ultimately be used before the session begins, we can create images that do more than make food look delicious. They provide consistent, professional visual content that strengthens your brand and helps turn attention into interest—and interest into customers.
